Chappell Books

Pastor Paul Chappell's list of recommended books makes for interesting reading. Naturally they reflect, largely, his own theological stance, with plenty of stuff about Dispensationalism etc.

The list is accompanied by a general note that not everything about the books or the authors are endorsed. This is standard fare, but if taken for granted, there would always be someone who would prove to be the exception to the rule. It doesn't need to be said, but it does, if you know what I mean.

Of course, there are plenty of Reformed and Calvinist authors on his list. Not because Pastor Chappell is a Calvinist, but because like many another, his library would be much the poorer if he purged it of every Calvinist or Protestant author. As I often say, the meat is found in the Reformed writings. Therefore Mr C's list includes many Calvinists e.g. Spurgeon, Lloyd Jones, John McArthur, Fuller, Adams, Bridges etc. Plus John Piper. And Calvin admirers like John R Rice.

I must admit that I positively groaned to see that Dave Hunt's crude hatchet job on Calvinism * made the list. (On my desk beside me as I type) To me, even with allowances made for obvious doctrinal differences here, if Calvinism is only about a tenth as bad as Hunt ranted on about, why are there any Calvinists, writing on some of the most important issues in church life, in Pastor C's list at all?
