If?

In our last post, you can see the disagreement I had with the venerable Dr Gray of Texas who blandly told us all a couple of days ago that Spurgeon gave up his Calvinist beliefs. You can follow the Twitter timeline here, although don't bother if you are looking for him to do something simple and obvious i.e. give proof of his ludicrous claim.

During our exchange, he drew attention (again?) to his book where he has a whole chapter lambasting Calvinism. The article is so innoculous that I actually linked to it on Twitter. I don't expect anyone who knows their Calvinism will read his comments and on their basis leave the Reformed Faith. If they do, then it was only a matter of who got to them first. They were never going to run the course, anyway. No new arguments were presented in the article. If you have read the low level stuff of Curtis Hutson (linked here with the same reasoning) then you just about have Gray covered as well.
.
The above picture draws attention to just how little Gray really knows about Calvinism. He comes to the Perseverance of the Saints, a most noble doctrine openly embraced by non Calvinists like HA Ironside and David Cloud and Calvinists alike.  And what do we observe? He can't even define it! He prefaces his bare statement with an  "if" because the reality is that he is clueless about the subject. Has he not the basic wit to consult John Calvin's theological works e.g. the Institutes of the Christian Religion and commentaries which are readily online, complete with search engines? Does it not cross his mind to consult the equally accessible authoritative church confessions? (or for all you #BaptistHeritage types out there) But Gray can't even define it - his one stab at it's meaning is radically wrong - and yet He is against it anyway! All this goes into a chapter in a book purporting to help us all ward of Satan's attacks against the church. Dear help us all if this is our line of defence :o)
.

So, there you go. Advice: Take with a generous pinch of salt. #CalvinIsSafe...
