Shorter Catechism

My earlier mention on Twitter (above) of the Shorter Catechism reminded me of an incident which a friend related. He was tackled by someone from a church which did not use a catechism to instruct its young. The tackler obviously didn't approve of the Q&A mode of instructing children. BTW: it is interesting to see that the marginal reading in Proverbs 22:6 "Train up a child" is "Catechise a child..."

Back to the story, my friend asked the critic a simple question i.e.  "What is God?" The critic struggled to find appropriate words, evidently being overrun by the hugeness of the task.  My friend then proceeded to point out that a  young lad or girl in his church's Sunday School would quickly reply to this question with these words:

"God is a Spirit, infinite, eternal and unchangeable, in His being, wisdom, power, holiness, justice, goodness and truth." (Answer to Question4 "What is God?" in the Shorter Catechism")

With obvious disagreement on the matter of baptism, CH Spurgeon was a big fan of the Assembly's catechism: http://weecalvin1509.blogspot.co.uk/2013/10/chs-sc.html
