CHS on Shorter Catechism

Although a Baptist with a greater affinity to the Calvinistic 1689 Baptist Confession for obvious reasons, yet CH Spurgeon spoke highly of the Westminster Confession of Faith on a number of occasions (as did other Baptists like BH Carroll) Spurgeon followed through his sentiments here by virtually republishing the Shorter Catechism but with a different answer to the question: Who is to be baptised? and some other minor adaptions. However, the basic and fundamental truths of the Catechism are left intact. The Shorter Catechism is a verifiable gem in the history of theological literature. Those who have the ability to memorise its contents have at their finger tips the best of sound Christian, Calvinist and (drawing on Spurgeon as my witness) even Baptist theology. #RealMeat #NoFluffStuff

For my part, I am more and more persuaded that the study of a good Scriptural catechism is of infinite value to our children, and I shall see that it is reprinted as cheaply as possible for your use. Even if the youngsters do not understand all the questions and answers in the “Westminster Assembly’s Catechism,” yet, abiding in their memories, it will be of infinite service when the time of understanding comes, to have known those very excellent, wise, and judicious definitions of the things of God. If we would maintain orthodoxy in our midst, and see good old Calvinistic doctrines handed down from father to son, I think we must use the method of catechising, and endeavour with all our might to impregnate their minds with the things of God. It will be a blessing to them-the greatest of all blessings-a blessing in life and death, in time and eternity, the best of blessings God himself can give.

Spurgeon on Creeds

Click here for the 1689 Baptist Confession (Calvinist)

"This little volume is not issued as an authoritative rule, or code of faith, whereby you are to be fettered, but as an assistance to you in controversy, a confirmation in faith, and a means of edification in righteousness. Here the younger members of our church will have a body of divinity in small compass, and by means of the Scriptural proofs, will be ready to give a reason for the hope that is in them. Be not ashamed of your faith; remember it is the ancient gospel of martyrs, confessors, reformers and saints. Above all, it is the truth of God, against which the gates of Hell cannot prevail. Let your lives adorn your faith, let your example adorn your creed. Above all live in Christ Jesus, and walk in Him, giving credence to no teaching but that which is manifestly approved of Him, and owned by the Holy Spirit. Cleave fast to the Word of God which is here mapped out for you."

"The arch-enemy of truth has invited us to level our walls and take away our fenced cities. He has cajoled some truehearted but weak-headed believers to advocate this crafty policy 'Away with creeds and bodies of divinity!' This is the cry of the day. Ostensibly, it is reverence for the Bible, and attachment to charity which dictates the clamorous denunciation; but at the bottom it is hatred of definitive truth. As Philip of Macedon hated the Grecian orators because they were watchdogs of the flock, so there are wolves who desire the destruction of our doctrinal formularies, that they may make havoc of the souls of men by their pestilent heresies."
